Private Joesph Densmoor
Played by Harry Burke
Joseph is a good man, has a big heart and forges deep connections with people. In England, there was a huge expectation on men to jump at the chance to go to war. If you weren’t in France, you were publicly branded a coward and shamed. Joseph is an example of someone who is pushed into signing up by society, despite being intelligent enough to see no glory in the violence. He struggles with the knowledge that he doesn’t fit the strong male provider role that he was raised to aspire to be. Wrestling with all of that makes him doubt himself when struggling to do the right thing, being true to himself and releasing the captive German.

Lance Corporal Bill Bray
Played By Thomas Davidson
Bill is a complex character. He is angry, stubborn and misunderstood. Hiding homosexuality was a huge struggle in these times. Coming to terms with it was even harder. To then find someone else in the same situation and fall in love is some luck. When we meet Bill, he has just had all this ripped away from him, with the death of his "close friend” George. This has launched a personal vendetta against every German he encounters. He is challenged in this story when he has to reconnect with his compassion to understand Joseph’s motives.

Josef
Played By David Bruckner
Josef is a young German soldier forced into the war, trying to survive. Josef crosses the path of Joseph and Bill when scouting an area under English command. Once captured we realise who he is, a scared young boy who missed home - more importantly his mother.

Colonel Webb
Played By John Tueart
More than being a vessel for the boys to go on their journey, Colonel Webb is the figure of authority that threatens to come crashing down on Joseph should he decide to let Josef go. He represents all the brutality of the WW1 Generals and Colonels that sent hundreds of thousands of men to die – with the only other option being shot for cowardice.
